Gallery was founded by Agijas Sūna in 1992. She is still running it. The path in art world for Agile started on a stage of Latvian National Opera as a ballet dancer. Afterwards promotion of art and culture she continued for 30 years while working at Latvian Public Television‘s News program „Panorāma“.
Now during last 15 years Agile Sūna Art gallery has realized several art projects. Some artists who first showed they works as students in a gallery nowadays have become well known personalities in Latvia.
For 2 – 3 — week period several one — man shows are happening at the gallery: painting. Sculpture, textile art, photography, glass art, prints. With help of different sponsorship gallery can invite artists to group and thematic — al exhibitions. For example: „Nude“, „Analogies of Music“, „Only the Sea“, „Red, Red“, „Sugar“, „Chair“ and several others. Every year together almost 20 exhibitions.
Starting since 1993 together with A/S Hansabanka a competition exhibition for the professional painters „Painting of the Year“ have been organized. The jury consists of only one specialist of art who is well known in Latvian art scene.
Gallery has organized and supported various Latvian artists exhibitions abroad — in Germany, Norway, Finland, Belgium, France, Czech Republic. But the exhibitions of visiting artists from Czech republic, Britain, Norway, Finland, Ukraine, Lithuania have become a new direction and interest of the gallery. Finnish artists have been showing their woks here not once.
For a long period the main supporter of several our projects have been Latvian Foundation of Culture.
Since 2002 all alone Stikla Galerija is running in Riga. This is the only one gallery representing Latvian glass art in Riga. On 14th february 2002 it was founded by glass artists Marta Gibiete, Ramona Peksena — Neiberga and Barbala Gulbe. Nowadays exhibitions there have been curated by Bārbala Gulbe, Elga Grīnvalde and Kristīna Sunepa — Celmiņa.
Stikla Galerija since the begining have enriched the art life of Riga with different monthly exhibitions at the gallery space in Old City –Laipu iela 6. After the showing in Riga, the same exhibitions or specific projects have been shown in regional art centers in Latvia or abroad.
The most significant projects realized with a help of Stikla Galerija: Children and Artists for the Zoo (2002), Prague — Riga Art Dialogue (2003), „Glass from latvia“ at Chateau de Val — Saint Lambert, Belgium (2004), international mosaic project „M+M“ (2004), „Recontre Europienne“ Montoban, France (2005), „Broken Things“ Estonia (2005), exhibition „Prestige“ Le Mans, France.
Besides the curating exhibitions artists from Stikla Galerija are organizing classes of glass techniques and how to create an art — works in glass for the grownups, youth and schoolchildren.
Also every year some foreign glass artist has a possibility to show his works at the exhibition space of Stikla Galerija: Merle Kannus, Kati Kerstna „Heavy Estonian Air“ (Estonia) 2003, Lucho Dochev „Across“ (Bulgaria) 2004, Cicy Ching „Illuminations“ (Hong Kong) 2005, Matthew Durran „Solid Air“ (Great Britain) 2005, Egle Kartanaite &Agne Jonkute „The white“ (Lithuania) 2006.
